History

Premiere!

The Story of our Scangaard 21 Classic began in 1943 when the German Shippingcompany “Laeisz” ordered a fleet of wooden “Padua-Dinghies” from the well known boatyard “Abeking & Rasmussen” in Bremen-Lemwerder.

From this point on all cadets of the company with the famous “P-Liner” got their basic naval education on this type of boat.

After the war Erich F. Laeisz became president of the “Deutsche Hochseesport-Verband Hansa (DHH)“ a German offshore-sailing association with a long tradition and still today running the biggest and best known German sailing academy in Glücksburg on the Baltic, the “Hanseatische Yachtschule (HYS)”. When re-starting the activities after the war in 1951 seven Padua Dinghies were the first boats to be used for the basic education until the 1980’s.

Constant maintenance of the traditionally built wooden boats finally signalled the time for a change. Wilfried Lehmann, director of the academy ordered GRP-production moulds from the “Paduas” to start building up a new fleet of boats. These became known as “Hanseatische Kieljolle” or – in short “Hans KJ” and still in daily use, allowing thousands of sailing-apprentices taking their first steps on water in all weather-conditions.

The strength of building, easy handling, roomy and deep cockpit, comfortable steering and seaworthiness are the basic arguments for safe and uncomplicated sailing.

Classical and timeless lines have ensured that these yachts remain attractive and distinctive craft.

Today

After finishing a complete new fleet of boats for the HYS Sailing-Academy the production moulds had not been in use for more than two decades and finally came to a local Danish boatyard in Æroskøbing in poor condition.

In 2005 we started repair of the still existing hull and deck mould as well as complete reconstruction of rig, interior, stiffeners, rudder, keel and deck equipment and managed to get the first “new-generation-boat” presented at the Hamburg Boat Show.

Future

The astonishing demand for this 20-footer created a lot of feedback about what should be different and more up-to-date in a new design.„Modern boatbuilding and classical lines……low maintenance and easy handling” was the essence to be distilled from the original design. After considering carefully the alternatives we decided to develop the new Scangaard 21 Classic.

The classical lines have been clearly transformed from the smaller yacht but the new 21 is longer and due to use of modern sandwich-laminates lighter and stronger.

The GRP-built inner moulding and internal ballast keep the boat easy to maintain, but still we are able to cater for individual tastes. If preferred the deck and cockpit can be ordered with Teak or Mahogany adding that additional touch of classicism.

The simple rig with swept spreaders guarantees easy handling under sail. The long keel and deep, ergonomically shaped cockpit keeps the boat safe and perfect for day sailing in coastal and estuary waters. Whether single-handed or sailing with a crew the yacht is easily prepared for sea.

The elegant and classical lines also contribute to the excellent sailing characteristics.

Production and development of the new 21-footer is constantly under the responsibility of our boatbuilding-apprentices. With implementing new innovative building-procedures and transforming responsibilities to “young shoulders” we demonstrate our care for the long-term-future of a high-quality building-process.
